YouTube Kids will now be natively available on LG, Samsung, and Sony smart TVs. It is an app offering a filtered and more child-friendly version of YouTube. The new feature is launched in the 26 countries where the app is currently available. In Europe, only four countries are concerned: the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain and France.
“Since launching just over two years ago, the YouTube Kids app has become the go-to destination for families around the world with more than 30 billion views and over 8 million weekly active viewers”, Google said.
“Previously a mobile-only application, YouTube Kids (..) will now make it easier for families with small children to access the service without having to use the app’s built-in casting feature”, TechCrunch wrote.
It further blurs the line between traditional TV and online content.
A new TV consumption behavior
“This new wave of TV consumption behavior is important to note”, Socialmediatoday commented. “And is no doubt why YouTube’s putting such focus on YouTube Kids. Because they don’t need to win over this audience, they already have them – this is the next generation of consumers. And they’re already watching TV in a new way”.
“The YouTube Kids app is the first Google product built from the ground up with kids in mind”, YouTube wrote on its blog. “The app makes it easier for kids to find videos on topics they want to explore. Whether it’s searching for science experiments, watching a favorite cartoon, or simply watching your favorite creator’s new videos, there is something for everyone”, YouTube added.
Specifically, the YouTube Kids app will be available on the following television sets: all 2015 – 2017 LG webOS TVs via the LG content store, all 2013 – 2017 Samsung Smart TVs and Blu-Ray Players that have access to the Samsung App Store, and after a firmware update on 2016-2017 Sony TVs (with the exception of Android TV, which will be available soon).
